TMC Fleet Members Top Maintenance Concerns Shift Considerably from Winter 2025 to Spring 2025
Diagnostics Listed as Number One Top Five Concern for First Time Since Council Tracking Began in March 2023, According to Latest Survey
The things that keep fleet managers up at night shifted considerably through the end of May 2025, according to a spring survey conducted by ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council’s (TMC) — at least when it comes to TMC fleet members’ top maintenance worries.
More than 400 TMC fleet members were asked to share their current top five fleet maintenance concerns, based on a wide-ranging list of 85 possible choices from which to select. Of those responding, the following were identified as the top reported concerns in descending order:
- The top maintenance issue identified in the Spring 2025 Survey was Diagnostics.
- Technician Shortage was identified as number two.
- Tires was identified as the number three maintenance issue facing fleets, holding the third position from last quarter. Tires was the only item to remain in the Top 5 from the previous quarter’s list.
- Technician Staffing and Technician Training (tie) were identified by fleets as number four.
- Cost Containment and Technician Retention were identified as number five (tie).
Labor Rates, Parts Shortage/Availability, and Preventive Maintenance Inspection just missed the top five coming in at sixth place (tie). Other concerns mentioned in the top 10 included: New Technology Challenges, Aftertreatment, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Brakes.
Diagnostics made the top five for the first time since TMC began conducting its Top 5 survey. Emissions/GHG, Aftertreatment and Inflation dropped off the top 5 list completely despite being in the top 5 last quarter. Technician-related concerns re-emerged as important issues after briefly diminishing in recent quarters — placing in four of the top five spots (counting ties).
In the winter of 2025, members said their top five concerns were:
1. Emissions/GHG
2. Aftertreatment
3. Tires
4. Cost Containment
5. Inflation (Parts, Oil, Fuel, Equipment)
For the first time, the issues of Cost Add Ons, Cost of Replacement Components, Component Service Life, and Lack of Root Cause Analysis by Vendors were cited as “Other/Write-In” concerns. Based on this development, TMC will adding these items starting with its summer 2025 follow-up survey instrument.
