TMC Fleet Members Top Maintenance Concerns Shift Slightly From Fall 2024 to Winter 2025

Tires Listed as Top Five Concern for First Time Since Council Tracking Began in Winter 2025, According to Latest Survey

The things that keep fleet managers up at night shifted slightly through the end of March 2025, according to a winter survey conducted by ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council’s (TMC) — at least when it comes to TMC fleet members’ top maintenance worries.

More than 400 TMC fleet members were asked to share their current top five fleet maintenance concerns, based on a wide-ranging list of 85 possible choices from which to select. Of those responding, the following were identified as the top reported concerns in descending order:

1.  The top maintenance issue identified in the Winter 2025 Survey was Emissions/GHG.

2.  Aftertreatment was identified as the number two maintenance issue facing fleets.

3.  Tires was identified by fleets as number three.

4.  Cost Containment was identified as number four.

5.  Inflation (Parts, Oil, Fuel, Equipment) was identified as number five

Reliability just missed the top five coming in at sixth place. Other concerns mentioned in the top 10 included: Technician Staffing (7th), Root Cause Analysis (8th), Brakes and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) (9th tie), and Standard Repair Times and Vendor Reliability (10th tie).

Tires made the top five for the first time since TMC began conducting its Top 5 survey. The other items in the Top 5 repeated from the previous survey, however rankings varied from fall 2024. Roadside breakdowns and Technician Shortage both dropped out of the top five entirely, after having ranked in the 5th and 3rd (tie) spots last time.

In the fall of 2024, members said their top five concerns were:

1.  Aftertreatment

2.  Cost Containment

3.  Inflation (Economic) and Technician Shortage

4.  Emissions/GHG

5.  Roadside Breakdowns

For the first time, the issue of tariffs/trade wars was listed as a concern for maintenance operations, cited twice in the data via the “other” category options. Based on this development, TMC will add the item “tariff/trade war” starting with its spring 2025 follow-up survey instrument.
